Learn six Finnish animal names by hunting for them

Most children go for PORO first. It is four letters, it sits in a row without much around it, and reindeer are the animal a child most wants to say in Finnish anyway. From there the hunt gets steadily harder: KOIRA, then LAMMAS, then SEEPRA, and last of all KORPPIKOTKA, which is eleven letters long and the reason this sheet is not over in two minutes.

KORPPIKOTKA is worth stopping on. It is two bird names joined: korppi, a raven, and kotka, an eagle, together making the vulture in the picture. Finnish does this constantly, and a child who learns to look for the seam in a long word has learned something they will use for years. Say the two halves aloud, then let them search for the whole.

The pictures do the translating, so no adult needs to speak Finnish to sit alongside. Point at the swan, find JOUTSEN, circle it, and both of you have learned a word. This is the sort of sheet that fills the last ten minutes of a language club or keeps one child busy while another finishes something else. Nobody is racing and there is no right speed; a word still uncircled at bedtime is simply one to look for another day, and no worse for the wait.
