Pack a Finnish rucksack: six words to find in the grid

Five of the six words here are things you take with you: TELTTA the tent, KARTTA the map, KOMPASSI the compass, KIIKARI the binoculars and KÖYSI the rope. The sixth is KETTU, a fox — the thing that turns up when you are camping whether you invited it or not. Pictures printed beside the list make every meaning plain before the search begins.

Finnish makes a great deal of doubled letters, and this list shows why they are worth looking at closely. TELTTA and KARTTA each carry a doubled consonant in the middle, and a child scanning at speed can slide straight past one. KÖYSI brings ö and y together, two letters that ask English eyes to slow down and check. Reading a Finnish word aloud, letter by letter, is rarely wasted effort here; the spelling always tells the truth.

Good before a trip away, or during a topic on maps and the outdoors. Sit alongside for the first two words and then leave your child to it; the picture list means nobody gets stuck wondering what they are looking for. Six words is about right for one sitting at this age, and finding a fox among the kit is a small reward at the end. Afterwards, turn the sheet over and see how many they can still name from the pictures alone.
