Short Finnish words to find at Easter

This is one of the gentler sheets in the set. Three of its words are five letters or fewer — KORI a basket, KUKKA a flower, RISTI a cross — and KARKKI, a sweet, is barely longer. Short words get found fast, and a child who has circled two within the first minute will usually stay with the page for the harder ones. The pictures at the top take any guesswork out of the meanings.

NARSISSI and PERHONEN are those harder ones. The daffodil doubles its s in the middle, exactly the sort of detail that decides whether a word is found or walked past, and the butterfly runs to eight letters and wants a finger held under the row. Both are pictured, so the meaning is never in doubt — only the letters are. Reading all six aloud once beforehand halves the difficulty.

Spring is when Finnish lessons tend to pick up flower and creature words anyway, so this sits neatly beside them. It works at home too, in the restless days before a holiday. Read the six through, hand over a pencil and leave your child alone with it; a word not yet found is the only thing that can go wrong, and it will turn up sooner or later.
