Whisk, bowl, tongs: Finnish words for a child who likes cooking

Kitchen words are the ones a child actually uses, which is why they stick. VISPILÄ is the whisk, KULHO the bowl, PIHDIT the tongs. Bake something on a Saturday morning, name the tools in Finnish as you pick each one up, then put this sheet on the table afterwards. The words will already be half learned. Two of the six are compounds, and they are the interesting ones. LEIKKUULAUTA is a cutting board — a cutting word joined to a board word. KAKKUVUOKA is a cake tin, built the same way. Finnish makes new nouns by sticking old ones together, and a grid is a quiet place for a child to notice the joins for the first time. Long Finnish words are almost always two short ones in a coat. Once seen, it cannot be unseen.

PIHDIT is worth a note: like scissors and trousers in English, it exists only in the plural, so there is no singular form to hunt for. SIENI, the sponge, is the shortest word on the page and usually the first one circled. The pictures mean no explanation is needed before starting.
