Telling KIRJE from KIRJEKUORI in a grid of letters

Two of the words on this sheet begin the same way, and that is the whole difficulty of it. KIRJE is a letter; KIRJEKUORI is the envelope the letter goes in, literally a letter-shell. A child scanning the grid will find those first five letters and want to stop right there, so the page quietly teaches something worth knowing early on: read to the end of a Finnish word before you draw a ring round it.

The others in the grid are PAKETTI, a parcel, LEIMA, the stamp mark, and TOIMITUS, a delivery. Pictures sit alongside each in the list, so a child who cannot yet read Finnish still knows exactly what is being looked for. The words run across and down; the child scans, recognises and circles. This is recognition practice rather than spelling practice, and one page holds a young learner about as long as attention lasts.

It fits a topic on the post, a letter-writing week, or the afternoon after a child has posted something of their own. If you want a little more out of it, have them copy PAKETTI and LEIMA onto a real parcel afterwards and see whether the shapes come back. Nothing on the sheet is marked, so a grid left half-circled can be picked up again later in the week without any sense of catching up.
