Six vegetables, six Finnish names, one grid of letters

The vegetables here are ones a child already knows by sight: a carrot, a potato, a cucumber, sweetcorn, a radish and a pepper. What is new is the writing beside them. PORKKANA, PERUNA, KURKKU, MAISSI, RETIISI and PAPRIKA sit somewhere in the grid, across or down, and your child reads through the letters until one of them appears whole.

Doubled consonants do most of the work in this set, and they are worth naming out loud. PORKKANA has two Ks, KURKKU has two more, and in Finnish that doubling is heard rather than decorative — the sound is genuinely held. A child who notices it while hunting is learning how the language sounds, not only how it looks. PAPRIKA and MAISSI are the quickest to spot, since both look close to their English cousins; leave RETIISI until last if you want the sheet to end on a small effort.

This one earns its place next to a chopping board. Print it while something is being prepared and let your child match the word on the page to the thing on the table. Nothing is scored, so an interrupted sheet can simply be finished later. Two or three of these words will still be there next week, which is really the point.
