Two of these Finnish words end in the same word for machine

LENTOKONE is an aeroplane and KAIVINKONE is a digger, and the piece they share, KONE, simply means machine. A flying machine and a digging machine. Show your child that ending before they start and two of the six words on this sheet become much easier to spot in a crowded grid. The other four are JUNA the train, BUSSI the bus, VENE the boat and JAHTI the yacht.

BUSSI is the one most children find first, because it looks so nearly like English, and that early success matters more than it sounds. JUNA and VENE are short and clean. JAHTI takes a moment longer, mostly because the opening J does not sound the way an English reader expects. The two KONE words are the long haul, and the trick is to hunt for the ending rather than the beginning — once a child spots KONE sitting in a line, the rest of the word is usually attached to it.

Print it for a journey, or for the sort of afternoon when a child is already lining up toy cars along the edge of a rug. Nothing is timed and nothing is marked, so a word left uncircled is not a failure. Afterwards the pictures do a second job: point at one and see whether JUNA or BUSSI comes back without the page being consulted.
