Learn Finnish: picture word search

The shortest word here is three letters, and two of them match

Beginner Finnish · Vocabulary

JÄÄ means ice. It is three letters long and two of them are the same dotted A, which makes it the fastest word on the sheet to find and a sensible one to start with. MÖKKI is a cabin, HYLJE a seal, IGLU an igloo — four Finnish words in all. The two remaining pictures, cocoa and pine, are labelled in English on this page, so treat those as a rest rather than a lesson.

The dotted letters are the thing to watch. Ä is not A, and a child scanning fast will slide straight past JÄÄ or MÖKKI looking for the plain letter. Say them first: Ä sits further forward in the mouth, close to the vowel in "cat". Ten seconds spent on that before any searching begins saves a good deal of frustration in the middle of the grid.

Keep it for a cold day indoors, or for the stretch after coats and boots have come off and nobody wants to go out again. There is no clock on it and nothing is scored, so an unfinished grid can sit on the table until someone wanders back to it. HYLJE is the word children tend to remember afterwards, probably because a seal is more interesting than a cabin.
