JÄÄ means ice. It is three letters long and two of them are the same dotted A, which makes it the fastest word on the sheet to find and a sensible one to start with. MÖKKI is a cabin, HYLJE a seal, IGLU an igloo — four Finnish words in all. The dotted letters are the thing to watch. Ä is not A, and a child scanning fast will slide straight past JÄÄ or MÖKKI looking for the plain letter. Say them first: Ä sits further forward in the mouth, close to the vowel in "cat". Ten seconds spent on that before any searching begins saves a good deal of frustration in the middle of the grid.
