Tree and fruit names in French, tucked into a grid of letters

The picture list shows trees and the fruit they carry: an orange, a plum, a banana, a pine, a juniper. Your child hunts through the letter grid for the names and circles each one as it turns up. ORANGE is spelled exactly as it is in English, which makes it an easy first find and a gentle way in. The picture beside each name shows exactly what is being asked for.

PRUNE is the trap. In French it means plum, the fresh fruit, not the dried one an English speaker pictures. Saying the word aloud once fixes the difference better than explaining it. BANANE keeps an extra E on the end. Three of the six answers on this sheet are printed in their English form rather than in French, so you may want to supply those French names yourself while checking.

That makes it a sheet to do beside an adult rather than alone. Take it outdoors if you can: naming a real pine or a plum tree in French while standing underneath it does more than any grid will. Print it as often as you like — it costs nothing, and can be repeated whenever the words start to fade. There is no timer, no score, and nothing to hand in at the end of it.
