A tent, a torch, a fox: German camping words buried in a grid

The pictures cover both the kit and the wildlife: a tent, a torch, a backpack, water, a fox and a rabbit. ZELT is four letters and easily missed; TASCHENLAMPE is twelve and takes up most of a line. Having lengths that different in one grid is useful, because a child learns to scan for shape as well as for a first letter.

RUCKSACK is the free gift, since English borrowed it whole and a child reads it and simply knows it. TASCHENLAMPE rewards a moment's unpacking: TASCHE is a pocket and LAMPE is a lamp, so a torch is a pocket-lamp. FUCHS and KANINCHEN must be learned properly, and the CH sitting in the middle of both is the sound English speakers get wrong at first.

Print it before a camping trip or a night in the garden and the words get used the same day, which is when vocabulary sticks. If your child finds WASSER before anything else, that is normal, as doubled letters catch the eye. Let them circle in whatever order they like; nothing on this sheet has to be done in sequence, and there is no reason not to run the same six words again next week. A second pass is usually much faster, which children notice and enjoy.
