Where on the Number Line? Sixty to One Hundred

A tick stands at every whole number from 60 to 100 on each line of this 2nd grade number-lines page, with labels printed at 60, 65, 70 and on up in fives to the hundred. Three lines fill the sheet, and two orange arrows point at unnamed ticks on each of them with an empty dashed box above every arrow: six numbers to write. The ticks are close together at this length, which means the finger has to be used as well as the eye, and counting three of them in the eighties is genuinely fiddly.

This is the top end of the second grade counting range and the part of it children rehearse least. The nineties in particular get little practice, and a child who has to name the tick after 97 is doing something they may not have done aloud all term. Density is the other demand the page makes. With a tick at every number and labels only every five, the count is short but the visual tracking is not, so accuracy depends on keeping a finger on the landmark while the other hand or the eye moves. Losing count by one is the standard error here, and it is a tracking failure rather than a number failure.

Print the PDF free and allow a ruler or a finger to be laid along the line; nobody counts forty ticks by eye alone and the page is not testing that. Ask for the answers to be read out in order at the end, so ninety-seven follows ninety-six by ear as well as on paper. Number line 40 to 60 is the shorter run through the fifties, and number line to 100 counting in tens covers the same hundred with a tick every ten instead of every one.
