Picture Tracing Worksheets: Trace the Garden Path to the Door

Kindergarten Fine Motor & Pre-Writing PDF only Aligned standard — coming soon

This page is one complete picture, not a row of separate drawings. A cottage with a chimney, a four-pane window and a pointed attic window stands on flat ground, a big tree spreads its crown beside it, a butterfly flies between the roof and the leaves, and a garden path runs from the bottom edge of the page up to the front door. Two tulips grow beside the bottom of the path, a rabbit sits on the grass, and a cloud and a sun fill the sky. Almost every line is dashed (only the window panes, the sun's rays and the grass tufts are solid), and when the last dash is traced the garden is finished.

Tracing a whole scene asks for more than steady strokes. The child has to choose where to start, follow long lines like the ground and the path from one side to the other, close round and square shapes like the sun and the windows, and keep going picture by picture until nothing is left grey. The dashes lie exactly on the drawing's own lines, so there is nothing to erase and nothing to guess. Small details such as the sun's rays and the grass tufts are already drawn, so the effort goes into the lines that matter. Talk about the garden while tracing: who lives in the house, where does the path go?

The worksheet prints as a single PDF page with room for the child's name and the date. It suits kindergarten and the end of preschool, and it works well as a calm start to the day or a quiet table activity. When this page is easy, try the dotted town street for finer lines, or the forest page where five dashed animals hide among solid trees. Picture tracing follows the outline of whole pictures; abstract line practice, step-by-step drawing and numbered dot-to-dot have their own pages.
