Math Maze

Skip Counting Maze by 5s: Fly the Balloon to the Rainbow

Grade 2 Number & Operations in Base Ten Common Core

A hot air balloon rises from the green start circle into a dawn sky. Its way is a road of clouds, and on the clouds sit numbers. At the top waits a rainbow. The right road counts by 5s: 5, 10, 15, 20 and on to 100. A paper airplane, a seagull and the sun share the sky.

Skip counting by 5s is a second grade standard, and this maze makes the step the rule. Most of the wrong clouds also end in 0 or 5, so a child cannot simply pick any number that looks right; the wrong clouds jump too far ahead, go back, or repeat a number already passed. To choose, the child has to add 5 to the number on the last cloud each time. Counting aloud while drawing, and checking that each number is exactly 5 more, keeps the balloon on course to 100.

The page prints as a PDF, works as a screen version where the child drags the balloon from cloud to cloud and presses Check, and comes with an answer key showing the counting road in colour. In the same family, the number maze counts 1 to 20 for kindergarten, and the running-total maze keeps a total within 100 across plus and minus signs. These are picture mazes with a story; square-grid mazes, dot-to-dot and word sorting have their own pages.
