Tangram Worksheet
Tangram Puzzles: Which Solution Matches the Shadow?
Each of the four rows on this 2nd grade page opens with a solid shadow and then shows three finished tangram builds of that same figure. One of the three stands exactly as the shadow does. The other two are the identical set of pieces turned a quarter or a half turn, or flipped over, so every candidate has the same area and the same outline and differs only in how it is set on the paper. The sheet shown runs a down arrow, a standing rectangle, a hooked arrow and a left arrow.
This is orientation practice with the content held still, which is why it sits a year above the shadow page. The distractors are never the wrong figure; they are chosen from outside the shadow's own symmetries, so no turned copy can accidentally cast the right shadow, and a child cannot succeed by counting pieces or comparing size. The rectangle row is the cleanest demonstration: upright or lying down, it is the same rectangle, and only one of those is what the shadow shows.
One sheet, four rows, twelve candidates. The correct build never sits in the same column twice, so guessing a pattern down the page fails. Use it after the missing-piece sheet and beside any rotation work: it is the only face in the tangram family where the child never builds anything and the answer is entirely about position.
