Who Is He? Pronouns in Sentences

Grade 2 Language PDF only Common Core

Five short scenes fill this 2nd grade page. Each names two people at the top — Lily and Tom are in the kitchen, Ben and Anna are in the park — with their pictures and name cards on the left, and then two more sentences beneath in which the name has been replaced by a boxed He or She. The child draws a line from each boxed pronoun back to the name it stands for, so every scene takes two lines and the page takes ten.

Reference is the content here, not substitution: the pronoun is already in place and the question is who it points to. That is the step from 1st grade to 2nd, and it is the one that starts to matter in real reading, where a he three sentences later has to be tracked. Each scene pairs one male and one female name, so the pronoun itself resolves the reference and a child can check their answer against the name without rereading.

One sheet, five scenes, ten lines. Because the gender of the two names settles every pair, the sentences beneath can be read for pleasure rather than for clues — which is a fair place for a 2nd grader to start. Follow it with the rewrite face, where the child has to produce the pronoun rather than trace it back.
