3-Digit Column Addition Without Regrouping

Six additions into the hundreds fill this Grade 2 page — 415 + 132, 623 + 254 and their like — each stacked in place-value boxes three columns wide. Every column adds to nine or less, so no carrying is needed anywhere on the sheet. Ones first, then tens, then hundreds, one digit written into each box as the child works steadily leftward.

The useful discovery on this page is that a third column adds no new mathematics whatsoever. A child who can run the routine over two places runs it over three by doing exactly the same thing once more, and noticing that is worth more than the six answers are. It is also where place value gets a workout: the 4 in 415 is four hundreds, and the column it sits in is the only reason the digit means that. Bigger numbers, identical method, is a genuinely encouraging thing for a seven-year-old to find out.
