2-Digit Column Addition Without Regrouping

Six two-digit additions stand in columns down this Grade 2 page, each digit in its own place-value box: 34 + 25, 61 + 17, and four more of the same shape. No column ever totals more than nine, so nothing is ever carried anywhere on the sheet. The child adds the ones, writes that digit in its box, moves left, adds the tens, and writes that one — the same four moves, six times over.

The habit being built here is physical as much as mathematical. Start at the right, work one column at a time, keep one digit per box, and never let the pencil drift leftwards before the ones are finished. Left to right feels natural to a child who reads that way, and it works perfectly well until the first carry, at which point it stops working at all — so the direction is worth insisting on now, while insisting costs nothing. The boxes do quiet work too: crooked columns cause more early errors than faulty adding does.
