Column Arithmetic Worksheet

Column Method Review: Mixed Widths and Operations

Grade 2 Number & Operations in Base Ten Common Core

This Grade 2 review page shuffles everything the column method has covered so far. Two-digit problems sit beside three-digit ones, additions beside subtractions, and all six are still free of carrying and borrowing. Nothing on the page is new; what is new is that no two problems in a row necessarily ask the same thing, so each one has to be read properly before the child starts at the ones column.

A review like this is best used as a gate. Regrouping is genuinely difficult, and it goes badly for children whose underlying routine is still shaky — every carried digit lands on top of an existing wobble. Six mixed problems answered accurately, with no prompting about where to start or which way to work, is a fair sign that the method itself is secure and the next difficulty can safely be added. Six problems with two careless slips is a sign to spend another week here instead, which is not a setback at all.

The sheet prints free as a PDF and doubles neatly as a short assessment. The single-focus pages behind it — two-digit addition, two-digit subtraction, three-digit addition — are still there for anything that wobbles, and addition and subtraction with regrouping is what this page is clearing the way for.
