Beginning Sounds Worksheet
Beginning Sounds with Breakfast — Letter M
Listen for the first sound in muffin. On this sheet the child is handed the letter M and finds every one of the breakfast foods whose name begins with its sound — muffin, milk and melon all open with M. Saying each word, catching its opening sound, then tying that sound to the letter M is the Kindergarten letter-sound link this practises, set among an egg, a pancake and a banana.
Hearing the opening sound of a spoken word and tying it to a letter is exactly the letter-sound correspondence Kindergarten readers build. Marking the breakfast foods that begin with M rehearses it many times: say muffin, listen to its start, match M. Because the child works from pictures and their own voice, no reading is needed — just the ear and the growing sense that M stands for one particular sound.
Once a child can pick the M sound out of a word like muffin, that same careful listening works everywhere. When this sheet feels easy, move on to the A-sound pictures in breakfast, or the B-sound pictures in breakfast. Every beginning-sounds worksheet and the full breakfast foods set are free to print or play online for kindergarten, and each first sound a child names makes the next letter that little bit quicker to catch.
