Beginning Sounds Worksheet

Beginning Sounds with Winter — Letter B

Kindergarten Reading: Foundational Skills Common Core

Begin with boots and listen to its first sound. This sheet asks the child to find every one of the winter things that starts the same way as B — boots — and mark them. The point is the sound at the front of each word and the letter B it belongs to, the Kindergarten letter-sound link, set in a scene mixing snow, a mitten and a scarf so the child sifts many opening sounds to find B's.

To find what begins with B, a child must say each picture and isolate its first sound, then judge whether it matches B. That is the heart of early phonics — knowing the sound a letter makes and catching it at the front of words like boots. The varied snow, a mitten and a scarf keep a wide set of opening sounds in play, so the work never narrows to one rehearsed answer; the child really has to listen.

A child who hears that boots opens with the B sound is doing real reading groundwork, one picture at a time. Keep going with the C-sound pictures in winter, or the E-sound pictures in winter. The full winter things collection and every beginning-sounds worksheet are free to print or play online for kindergarten, and every first sound a child catches builds toward sounding out whole words later.
