Color by Number Worksheet

Color by Number: Match Every Number to Its Color

Kindergarten Counting & Cardinality Aligned standard — coming soon

This is color by number in its classic form: a picture built from outlined shapes, each shape holding a single numeral from 1 to 6, and a legend that pairs every numeral with a color word. The child reads the number in a shape, finds that number in the legend, reads which color it calls for, and colors the shape to match. No sums to solve and nothing to count — just number, legend, color, repeated shape by shape until the whole picture blooms.

The magic of the classic version is that it isolates one skill and drills it joyfully: numeral recognition. A 3 in the corner of a shape must be known instantly and certainly, because the coloring depends on it — mistake it for an 8 and the picture says so. Every shape is therefore a tiny read-the-numeral flashcard with a built-in reward. The legend adds two quiet bonuses: the child practices reading color words in a context where guessing is easy to check, and learns to use a key — looking something up rather than remembering it — which is the exact skill maps and charts will demand later. Keeping math out is deliberate; nothing distracts from knowing the numbers cold.
