Word Web: One Word, Many Compounds

Grade 2 Language PDF only Common Core

One word in the middle, three pictures around it, twice: this 2nd grade compound-words page prints two word webs. In the top card a boxed fish with the word fish printed under it sits at the left, and three branches lead to three picture equations — a goldfish plus a fish, a starfish plus a fish, a jellyfish plus a fish — each ending in a handwriting rule. In the bottom card the hub is a rain cloud labeled rain, and its three branches are a cloud plus a coat, a cloud plus a rainbow, a cloud plus a drop. The child writes the compound each branch makes on its rule: goldfish, starfish, jellyfish; raincoat, rainbow, raindrop. The hub word is printed; the branch words come from the pictures.

A web shows something the row-by-row pages cannot: one word is a building block that appears in many compounds, sometimes at the end (goldfish, starfish) and sometimes at the front (raincoat, rainbow). Seeing fish stay fixed while the first half changes teaches the child to read a compound as a head plus a modifier, and seeing rain move to the front of the next web shows the block can go either side. The hub word is given so the spelling of the repeated part is never in doubt; the effort goes into the changing half. The teacher asks, after the three rules are filled, for one more word with fish in it — catfish, swordfish — and the string keeps going off the page.

It prints on one sheet with three rules per web and generous space between the two. It closes the compound-words sequence: the picture-plus-picture page builds one word at a time, the split and match pages take words apart and put them together, and the web collects a family around one word. A dictionary page or a word wall is the natural next step for the words the class adds.
