Compound Words Worksheet
Match the Halves: Two Pictures, One Word
Two columns of pictures and a column of handwriting rules make up this 2nd grade compound-words page. The middle column holds the first halves — a bird, a sun, a rain cloud, the earth, a hand, a water bottle — each with a dot at its right edge; the right column holds the second halves in shuffled order — a bag, a melon, a worm, a house, a coat, a flower — each with a dot at its left. The child draws a line from each first picture to the picture that finishes its word, then writes the whole word on the rule beside the first picture: birdhouse, sunflower, raincoat, earthworm, handbag, watermelon. Six lines, six words, and every second picture is used once.
Matching before writing is the scaffold this page adds to the base compound page. There, the two pictures sit side by side and only the spelling is open; here the child has to test each first half against six candidates and hear which combination is a real word — sun and worm is not, sun and flower is. The shuffle is deliberate: no line runs straight across, so the choice is a meaning choice, not a position one. Writing the word after drawing the line closes the loop, and the rule sits on the same row as the first picture so the child can check the two halves while spelling. The teacher looks for lines that cross the column twice; that row was guessed.
It prints on one sheet in color, with a long rule per row. Use it between the picture-plus-picture base page and the split-the-compound page, especially for children who can build a compound when the halves are handed to them but cannot yet choose the halves. The compound-detective page follows for children who are ready to reject words that are not compounds.
