Six Danish Words That Fly (One of Them Is a Frisbee)

One of the six words on this sheet is not an animal. Hidden in the grid are BI, SOMMERFUGL, BILLE, MYG, PELIKAN and FRISBEE — bee, butterfly, beetle, mosquito, pelican and, yes, a frisbee, which does fly. Each word is printed beside its picture, so the meanings are clear from the outset, and the child's job is to read the rows and columns and circle all six.

BI is two letters and will be found in seconds; SOMMERFUGL is ten and will not. That gap is useful, because a beginner needs an early success before a hard one. SOMMERFUGL repays a closer look too — sommer plus fugl, summer plus bird, which is a lovely thing to be told about a butterfly, and the sort of fact a child repeats at dinner.

It works for a child who is already interested in insects, or as the second or third Danish sheet once a few words have become familiar. Read the list aloud before starting: MYG and BILLE look nothing like the English words they stand for, and hearing them once makes them far easier to spot in the grid.
