The kerst- words, hidden in a letter grid

Three of the six hidden words on this sheet begin the same way. KERSTMAN is Father Christmas, KERSTSTAL is the nativity scene, KERSTSOK is the stocking — kerst is simply Christmas, doing the work at the front of each one. The other three stand alone: KRANS for the wreath, LINT for the ribbon, ENGEL for the angel. Pictures run beside the grid so nobody has to guess which word belongs to which.

That shared beginning is the whole lesson here, and also the trap. A child who spots KERST in the letters and circles straight away will land on the wrong word about half the time, so this puzzle quietly forces them to read to the end. It is a small habit that matters far beyond December, and it is much more pleasant to learn over a nativity picture than over a spelling list.

Advent is the one stretch of the year when a child will happily repeat the same six words daily, so this sheet earns its keep in the run-up to the holidays — at the kitchen table, in a Dutch club, or as the quiet task while a class finishes its cards. Print a stack of them. Afterwards, ask your child to point out the kerststal on a real card and see whether the word comes back.
