Six Dutch kitchen words, hidden in a grid of letters

DEEGROLLER is a long word for a small job: deeg is dough, and the roller rolls it flat. Six Dutch kitchen words hide in this letter grid — DEEGROLLER, DUNSCHILLER, BLENDER, LEPEL, RASP and PAN — with a picture beside each one so nobody has to guess. A child studies the drawing of the spoon, sees that Dutch calls it LEPEL, and then goes looking for those five letters lying across a row or down a column.

The two long compounds are where the real learning sits. DUNSCHILLER breaks into dun, thin, and schiller, the thing that peels, so a peeler is quite literally a thin-peeler. The short words work differently: PAN and RASP are near enough to English to be free gifts, and finding them early gives a child the nerve to attack the longer strings of letters.

If a word will not come, say it aloud — LEPEL sounds roughly like lay-pull — because hearing the shape of a word often makes its letters jump out of the grid.
