Find six Dutch instrument words in the grid

Hand this out when the recorders have been put away and the room still needs settling. The grid holds six Dutch words from the music corner: FLUIT, ACCORDEON, TROMBONE, KEYBOARD, BEKKENS and NOTE. Each has its picture alongside, so a child who cannot yet read Dutch can still work out which letters to hunt for — the cymbals in the picture list are BEKKENS, and once that is settled the search is simply a search.

Three of the six are easy wins. ACCORDEON, TROMBONE and KEYBOARD look almost exactly like their English cousins, which is a true and useful thing about Dutch: a great many musical terms travelled between the languages barely changed. FLUIT and BEKKENS are the ones a child genuinely has to learn, and BEKKENS is a plural — one cymbal is a bekken, a pair of them is BEKKENS.

NOTE is the trap. It looks exactly like an English word, so children ring it first without really reading it and come away with nothing new in their heads. Ask afterwards which picture it belonged to and the point lands. Otherwise this is a calm sheet: six words, no timer, nothing to score, a picture beside every answer. It sits well either side of a music lesson, putting the same vocabulary in front of a child twice.
