Owl, hedgehog, hawk: a Finnish hunt through the letters

HAUKKA is a hawk. TOUKKA is a caterpillar. They differ by one letter, they sit in the same grid, and a child who circles the wrong one has learned something useful about looking properly. That near-miss is the most valuable thing on this sheet, and it happens to a lot of children the first time round. Six words, six pictures, and one letter grid to comb through.

The other four are PÖLLÖ, the owl, SIILI, the hedgehog, HEINÄSIRKKA, the grasshopper, and LEPPÄKERTTU, the ladybird. Dotted vowels do a job in Finnish: Ä and Ö are separate letters, not decorated ones, and a child searching for PÖLLÖ has to accept that O and Ö are as different as O and E. Grids are a gentle place to learn that. It costs nothing to be wrong here.

Good after a woodland walk, or as the quiet ten minutes that follows one. Read the six words aloud before the pencil comes out: Finnish is spelled as it sounds, so a child who has heard HEINÄSIRKKA once can track it letter by letter. The pictures mean nobody is stuck wondering what the animal is. Print it or work it on screen — there is no score either way. Most children want to do the whole thing in one sitting.
