Doctor, syringe, plaster cast — the Finnish words for a hospital visit

A hospital appointment is easier when the words for it are already familiar, and that is a fair reason to print this one. LÄÄKÄRI is the doctor. RUISKU is the syringe — the word most children want to know and least want to meet. KIPSI is the plaster cast. Each has a picture beside it, and each is hidden in the letter grid. Six in all, and none of them abstract.

Two of the six are long. LÄMPÖMITTARI, the thermometer, and STETOSKOOPPI, the stethoscope, run to twelve letters each, and a child who tries to hold the whole word in mind while scanning will lose it halfway. Chunk them instead — three or four letters at a time — and they turn up quickly. That trick transfers to every long Finnish word afterwards. It is the single most useful habit on this page.

Teachers use hospital vocabulary in the week a class talks about looking after themselves; parents tend to reach for it the week before an appointment. Either works. Read the words aloud first — Finnish says exactly what it spells, so nothing surprises a child mid-search. The sheet prints in colour, or can be done on screen, and there is no score to worry about. Most children finish in about ten minutes, some in five.
