MERITÄHTI, and five more Finnish sea words to track down

MERITÄHTI is a starfish, and it is really two words stitched together: meri, the sea, and tähti, a star. Finnish does this constantly, and a picture word search turns out to be a quiet way of meeting the habit. Six sea words lie folded into the letter grid on this sheet — MERITÄHTI, VALAS, RAPU, KORALLI, MANAATTI and TONNIKALA — and a small picture beside each one tells a child what they are hunting for.

The hunt itself is simple. Eyes travel along a row, then down a column, until the letters of a known word fall into line and the child rings them. RAPU, the crab, is only four letters and scuttles past easily; TONNIKALA, tuna, is nine long and hard to miss. That difference is useful in practice — a child who takes the long words first has far fewer letters left to sift through afterwards.

Bring it out while a class is on sea creatures, or pair it with an aquarium visit and let a child circle whatever they actually saw. It is worth pointing at TONNIKALA and saying that its last part, kala, means fish, because kala turns up inside dozens of other Finnish names.
