Math Maze Within 100: Bring the Crane Its Number

Grade 2 Number & Operations in Base Ten Common Core

A building site with dirt roads fills this page. A red dump truck starts at the green circle with a number badge, and a yellow construction crane waits at the other end with its own number. Along the roads stand rounded signs, each with a change such as +10, −5 or +2, and each sign has a small box for writing the new total. Diggers, a cement mixer, a forklift, a bulldozer, logs and rocks fill the site around the roads.

The child starts with the truck's number and follows a road, writing the new number in each sign's box as the truck passes it. Only one road ends exactly on the crane's number. That is a running total: a chain of adding and subtracting tens and ones within 100, the mental math second graders practise all year, with each step written down so mistakes are easy to find. Other roads end close to the crane's number, sometimes one or five away, so careless steps show up at the finish.

The page prints as a PDF, works as a screen version where the child drags the truck's road and presses Check, and comes with an answer key showing the right road and every running total. In the same family, the skip-counting maze counts by 5s to 100, and the giraffe maze practises sums that make 10. These are picture mazes with a story; square-grid mazes, dot-to-dot and word sorting have their own pages.
