Read the Calendar: Every Question Is About the Days

Grade 2 Measurement & Data Aligned standard — coming soon

Every one of the four questions on this 2nd grade calendar worksheet is answered with the name of a day. May 2027 is printed as a full grid, Sun to Sat, with two stickers sitting on the month as decoration rather than as anything to look up. The questions ask what day of the week the 10th falls on, how many Wednesdays there are, what day the month starts on and what day it ends on. Each has a dashed box underneath, and each is answered by moving between a cell and the weekday header above it.

Narrowing every question to the days turns the page into a column-reading exercise. To count the Wednesdays a child has to travel straight down one column, and to name the first and last day of the month they have to notice that a month rarely starts on a Sunday or ends on a Saturday, which is why the grid has blank cells at both ends. Children who can recite the seven days in order often cannot yet do any of this, because reciting is a chain and reading a calendar is a table. The first and last day questions also plant the idea that the same date is a different weekday next month.

Print the PDF free and have the child trace one column top to bottom with a finger before writing the count, then check by looking at the header they landed under. Spelling the day names is part of the work here, so leave the wall calendar visible rather than correcting from memory. The first look version mixes weekday questions with dates and month length; the busy month version adds date arithmetic on a six-row grid. Alphabetical order is the other page that has children writing the day and month names carefully.
