Read the Calendar: A First Look at the Month

One month, printed properly. This 2nd grade calendar worksheet shows August 2026 as a full grid with Sun to Sat across a teal header, every date in its own cell, and two small stickers dropped onto the month, a soccer ball on one Friday and a little figure on another. Four questions follow in cream boxes laid out two by two, each with a dashed space for the answer: what day of the week the 6th falls on, how many Thursdays the month contains, on which date the ball sticker sits, and how many days the month has altogether.

Four questions is enough to cover the three ways a calendar gets read and no more. One asks the child to go from a date to a weekday, which means finding a cell and looking up to the header. One asks them to count down a column, which is the reading direction children miss most often, since a calendar looks like rows. One sends them hunting for a picture, and the last is answered by finding the largest number on the grid rather than by counting anything. Keeping the set short means a child can finish it and be talked through all four while the page is still fresh.

Print the PDF free and lay it beside the calendar on the classroom wall, asking the same four questions of the real month afterwards. If a child answers the Thursday question by counting every cell, show them the column once and ask again. The busy month version raises this to five questions on a six-row month with three stickers and adds a how many days between question; the days of the week version keeps four questions but makes every one of them about weekdays.
