Rounding Worksheet
Rounding to the Nearest 10
Fourteen numbers are set out in two columns on this 2nd grade page, each followed by an approximately-equal sign and one dashed box. A reference band across the top does two things at once: it works 47 into 50 with the ones digit picked out in coral, and it prints the digits 0 to 9 in two groups with a down arrow over the first five and an up arrow over the rest. The sheet shown runs 76, 79, 45, 633, 268, 267, 85, 53, 522, 54, 549, 67, 658 and 111.
Everything the page asks for is decided by one digit, and the strip is there so a child can check which half it falls in without being told again. Two of the fourteen end in five, the case where the rule has to be a rule rather than a judgement of which ten is nearer, and half the numbers are three digits long, so the tens place has to be found before it can be rounded rather than simply read off the front.
One sheet, fourteen numbers, fourteen boxes. This is the base page of the rounding family and the one with the most practice on it; the five faces built on it change the place, the direction or the shape of the task rather than adding more of the same. Keep the reference band visible, since every sibling page reprints it with a different worked example.
