Rounding to the Nearest 100

Grade 3 Number & Operations in Base Ten PDF only Common Core

Fourteen three-digit numbers fill this 3rd grade page in two columns, each with a single dashed box beside it. The reference band at the top works 472 into 500 with the tens digit marked in coral, and reprints the digit strip with 0 to 4 under a falling arrow and 5 to 9 under a rising one. The sheet shown runs 462, 350, 572, 467, 236, 397, 489, 328, 317, 874, 540, 851, 848 and 532. Every answer is a whole hundred.

One place to the left is the only change from the base page, and it is the change children get wrong, because the digit that decides is no longer the last one. That is why the instruction names the tens digit outright and why the worked example marks the 7 of 472 rather than the 2. Two of the fourteen sit exactly halfway — 350 and 540 — and 397 is the one that rounds up across a hundred boundary, from three hundred and something to 400.

One sheet, fourteen numbers, fourteen boxes. It is deliberately the same shape as the nearest-ten base page so the two can be set side by side and compared; the numbers are all between 101 and 949, so no answer is 0 or 1000. Print the round-to-both face afterwards, which asks for the ten and the hundred of one number at the same time.
