Division with Remainders: Ring the Groups

Grade 3 Number & Operations in Base Ten PDF only Common Core

Four piles of small animal pictures run down this 3rd grade page, each in its own card with the division written beside it: 29 ÷ 3 over twenty-nine elephants, 25 ÷ 2 over twenty-five zebras, 9 ÷ 2 over nine cats, 14 ÷ 5 over fourteen ducklings. Under each division wait two dashed boxes, the second marked R. The child draws rings around groups of the divisor — threes in the elephants, twos in the zebras — counts the rings, and writes that count in the first box and the pictures left outside any ring in the second. Every pile on the page leaves something over.

The remainder is a picture before it is a number here: the two elephants standing outside the rings are the 2 in 9 R 2. That is the concrete step the family builds on, and it is why the pictures are in neat rows of ten — a child can ring across a row and see how many threes fit. The divisors on the sheet are 2, 3 and 5 and the piles run up to 29, so a child who knows the twos, threes and fives tables can predict the rings before drawing them; a child who does not can still get every answer by ringing. Notation and picture agree on every card.

One sheet, a pencil for the rings and the boxes. This is the base page of the division-with-remainders family and the only one with a pile to ring; the share-it-out page deals the same kind of pile into boxes instead, and the practice-rows page keeps only the notation. The divisor set fans across the family — 2 to 5 on this sheet — so a class can start on small tables and move up. The standard is the 4th grade one, met here as 3rd grade practice.
