Subtraction Worksheet
Mixed Subtraction with Community Helpers — Grade 1
This sheet asks a child to find the result on some rows and the missing part on others, all with the same people. Taking a written number from a group of a chef, a nurse and a pilot gives one kind of answer; being shown the result and finding what was taken gives the other. Going back and forth keeps the focus on what subtraction means rather than on one repeated step. The numbers are held within twenty throughout, so each small problem stays something a Grade 1 child can check by counting.
A page that asks only one kind of question lets a child coast; a mixed page does not. Alternating result-unknown and missing-part rows keeps attention on the meaning of each problem, which is why mixed practice is valuable at Grade 1. The within-twenty range and pictured people keep the focus on thinking, not on big numbers.
Children who like community helpers enjoy not knowing which question is coming next, and it keeps a small group thinking. When this feels easy, try mixed subtraction with ocean life, or mixed subtraction with sports gear (black & white).
