Which Face Shows the Feeling?

Kindergarten Social-emotional learning: self-awareness PDF only Common Core

Six wide rows stack down this Kindergarten page. On the left of each row a feeling word sits alone in large type — tired, angry, happy, scared, surprised, sad — and on the right stand three yellow faces in white tiles. Only one of the three shows the word; the child reads the word and circles that face. The other two faces are real feelings too, taken from the same six, so the wrong choices look as plausible as the right one. Nothing is written; six circles finish the page.

The difference from the base matching page is that there is no elimination. With six faces and six words the last pair falls into place by itself; here each row is its own question with a fresh set of three, and a child must actually read scared and find the frightened face. The two faces easiest to confuse — scared and surprised — are kept out of the same row, so a row tests recognition rather than a fine distinction. The teacher can cover the faces, ask the child to say the word and make the face, then uncover and circle.

One sheet, pencil or crayon. This is the quick-check page of the feelings family: six answers, one look, and the teacher knows which of the six words are secure. Move to the how-do-you-feel page when all six are, since that page drops the word and gives a situation instead; go back to the match-the-face-to-the-word page if two or more rows go wrong.
