Write the Missing Ordinal Numbers

Grade 1 Counting & Cardinality (readiness) PDF only Aligned standard — coming soon

Eight zoo animals stand in each of the three lines on this 1st grade page, behind a flag and an arrow, and under every animal is a box. Four of the eight boxes in each line are already written and four are empty: the first line shows 1st, 3rd, 4th and 6th and leaves 2nd, 5th, 7th and 8th blank; the third shows 1st, 2nd, 4th and 8th. The child counts from the flag and writes the missing ordinal number in each empty box — the numeral and its ending, 2nd, 5th, 7th, 8th. Twelve boxes to fill across the page, and 1st is given on every line.

Writing the notation is the new skill here. On the Kindergarten pages the child only marks a place; now they have to produce 2nd, 3rd and the -th endings, and the printed boxes are the model — a child who is unsure how to write 7th can look along the line to 6th and 8th. Because the gaps fall in different places on each line, the child cannot copy a pattern from the strip above; each box has to be counted from its own flag. A line of eight reaches the -th endings that only begin at 4th, which is where the spelling work is.

One sheet, pencil, twelve short answers. This is the writing face of the ordinal-numbers family, a step above the find-the-place base page; the ordinal-words page swaps the numerals for the words second to eighth, and the which-place page asks for the number from a picture instead of a box. The animals are the wave's zoo theme.
