Beginning Sounds with Hospital Things — Letter B

KindergartenReading: Foundational SkillsCommon Core

Find the B sound among the hospital things. The child works across the scene, saying each picture and keeping the ones that begin with B — bandage. It is listening, not looking: bandage starts with B's sound, so it is marked, while a bed, a bandage and a stethoscope that begin differently are left. Matching a word's opening sound to its letter is the Kindergarten phonics move this rehearses, one picture at a time.

Linking the letter B to the sound it makes is the bedrock of Kindergarten reading, and this hunt practises it directly: the child hears the first sound of bandage and decides it belongs to B. This is letter-SOUND work, not letter-shape recognition — a child has to know what B sounds like, then catch that sound at the start of words like bandage, long before they could read those words on their own.

Once a child can pick the B sound out of a word like bandage, that same careful listening works everywhere. When this sheet feels easy, move on to the A-sound pictures in hospital things, or the C-sound pictures in hospital things. Every beginning-sounds worksheet and the full hospital things set are free to print or play online for kindergarten, and each first sound a child names makes the next letter that little bit quicker to catch.
