Beginning Sounds Worksheet
Beginning Sounds with Insects and Bugs — Letter S
The letter S sets this beginning-sound hunt. Among the bugs, the child marks every name that opens with the sound S makes — snail and slug. They test each picture by saying it: snail starts with S, so it counts. Listening for an opening sound and linking it to its letter — never spotting a printed S — is the early-reading skill this Kindergarten sheet rehearses.
Linking the letter S to the sound it makes is the bedrock of Kindergarten reading, and this hunt practises it directly: the child hears the first sound of snail and decides it belongs to S. This is letter-SOUND work, not letter-shape recognition — a child has to know what S sounds like, then catch that sound at the start of words like snail and slug, long before they could read those words on their own.
A child who hears that snail opens with the S sound is doing real reading groundwork, one picture at a time. Keep going with the A-sound pictures in insects and bugs, or the B-sound pictures in insects and bugs. The full bugs collection and every beginning-sounds worksheet are free to print or play online for kindergarten, and every first sound a child catches builds toward sounding out whole words later.
