Color by Code Worksheet

Color by Code: Solve the Sum, Match the Color

Kindergarten Operations & Algebraic Thinking Common Core

This Kindergarten color by code worksheet hides a math page inside a coloring page. Twelve outline shapes are scattered across the sheet, and each one holds a small addition problem. The child solves the little sum, checks the legend to see which color that answer calls for, and colors the shape to match. Solve, check the code, color — twelve times over, until every shape on the page has found its color.

Color by code works because the coloring is the reward and the math is the price of admission — a price children pay happily. Every shape asks for one small computation and one careful match against the legend, so the page quietly delivers a dozen repetitions of early addition facts along with genuine attention-to-detail practice. Reading a legend is itself a skill: it is the same key-reading children will use later on maps, charts, and graphs. And because the code maps numbers to color words, a little reading practice rides along for free.

Print the PDF free and let the crayons do the motivating. If the child loves the decoding feeling, number bonds to 10 gives the same addition facts a different outfit, and a cut, sort, and paste page swaps the crayons for scissors while keeping the careful looking.
