Counting Pennies and Nickels: Two-Coin Purses

Only two kinds of coin appear on this Grade 1 page: pennies and nickels. Six purses each hold between two and four of them, and the child counts the value and writes the total in cents in the box beside it. With one-cent and five-cent coins alone, every total on the sheet stays small and every count follows the same simple two-step shape.

Restricting the coins isolates the strategy all money counting is built on: count the bigger coin first in fives, then add the ones on top. Five, ten, eleven, twelve — said out loud, that is exactly the rhythm the child will later use with dimes and quarters, and it is far easier to learn when only two values sit on the table. Pennies and nickels also make the value-versus-size lesson unmistakable, because the nickel is the fatter coin and worth five of the small ones.
