Half of each picture is given; the child completes the other half square by square. Longer counts, more colors to keep track of, and figures whose edges step in and out instead of running straight down the grid.

Once a figure holds thirty squares, guesswork collapses and a system is needed. The reliable one is to work a row at a time: take one row, count each colored square's distance from the line, mark its partner, finish the row, and only then move down. Children who instead hop about the picture coloring whatever catches the eye lose their place and end up with a half that is nearly right, which in symmetry is simply wrong. Learning to be systematic on a picture is a lesson that transfers a long way beyond geometry.
