Mirror Pictures: House, Crown, Mushroom, Apple

A house, a crown, a mushroom and an apple sit half-drawn on this Grade 2 page, each built from colored squares on either side of a coral mirror line. The child completes the missing half of every picture, counting each square out from the line. The crown's points and the roof of the house make for edges that step in and out, so the counting has to stay honest the whole way up.

Where the heart-and-butterfly set borrows its shapes from nature, this one borrows from design, and the distinction is worth mentioning aloud: people build things symmetrically on purpose, because balanced things look right and often work better. Houses, crowns, plates, chairs and letters are all drawn to a mirror line by choice. The stepped diagonals of a roof or a crown point are also the hardest thing on the page technically — every step has to be matched exactly, and a single square slipped shows up as a lopsided castle.
