Mirror Pictures: Heart, Butterfly, Snowman, Tree

Four recognisable pictures wait half-finished on this Grade 2 page: a heart, a butterfly, a snowman and a tree, each drawn in colored squares on a grid with the coral mirror line down the middle. The child completes the missing half of every one, square by square. Because the shapes are familiar, the child knows what the picture is supposed to become long before it actually becomes it.

A named picture checks itself. A butterfly with one fat wing and one thin one looks wrong immediately, even to a child who has not yet spotted which square went astray — so the drawing becomes its own feedback and errors get found without anyone pointing at them. These four also make the natural point that symmetry is not a school invention: butterflies and trees and the human face are built this way, and once children start looking they find mirror lines everywhere between the classroom and home.
