Circle the Letter in the Words and Count

Kindergarten Reading: Foundational Skills PDF only Common Core

Six long rows run down this Kindergarten circle-and-count page, each with a small picture at the left, its word printed large on a handwriting rule, and a dashed box at the right end. The sheet shown is the M version: mask, mitten, HAMMER, MONKEY, arm and mushroom. Two of the six words are printed in capitals and four in small letters, so the child is hunting for both M and m. In each word the child circles every letter of the week and writes the count in the box — one in most rows here, two in hammer and mushroom. The top of the page carries the letter card and one lane of dashed capitals to trace, and nothing else.

Where the base page asks the child to hear a sound, this one asks them to see a letter, in both cases, anywhere in a word — the visual side of knowing a letter. Some words hold the letter once and some twice, and the shipped configuration keeps at least eight letters to find across the six rows, so the count is never all ones. Reading the word aloud is not required, but the picture invites it, and a teacher can listen for whether the child says the letter's sound as they circle.

Print one per child; the rows are wide enough for a crayon circle and the count box takes a single numeral. Because it carries a tracing lane, it still gives a minute of handwriting on the letter. Pair it with the beginning-middle-end page, which uses the same six-card layout but asks about the sound's position instead of its count.
