Measuring Jugs to 2000 ml: Reading Bigger Scales

The jugs on this Grade 2 page are the big ones, scaled all the way to 2000 ml, and the six readings run into the hundreds and thousands rather than the tens. Each jug shows labelled marks with ticks between them, and the child works out the tick value, reads the liquid level, and writes the amount in milliliters. Exactly the same method as the small jugs; considerably larger numbers to write down.

Working up to 2000 ml is where capacity starts connecting to the world outside the page. A liter is a carton of milk, two liters is the big bottle of water, and 1500 ml is neither of those but sits sensibly between them — and that sense of size is exactly what is missing when a child cheerfully writes 30 ml for a bucket. Estimating before reading is the habit to build here: look at the jug, guess, then read and compare. Being wrong by a little and noticing it is worth more than being right by accident.
