Capacity and Mass with Animals: Jugs and Scales

This Grade 2 measurement page splits itself between capacity and mass, with animals sitting on the balance pans. Three measuring jugs hold liquid at different levels for the child to read in milliliters; three balances weigh a duck, a hedgehog, a cat against gram weights for the child to read in grams. Six readings altogether, each one written down together with its unit.

Animals on the pans invite a question that a page of boxes never does: which one is heavier, and by how much? That single follow-up turns a reading exercise into comparison, subtraction and a small science conversation — how heavy might a real hedgehog be, is a duck heavier than a cat, would any of them actually sit still on a school balance. Measurement lives in that talk at least as much as in the writing down, and a themed page gives a class something to argue about while the units and tick marks quietly do their work.
