Reading Scales in Small Steps: 50 ml Marks

The jugs and balances on this Grade 2 page are marked far more finely than usual: the ticks step in fifties, so a reading of 250 ml or 350 ml sits between the labelled hundreds rather than on one of them. Vehicles ride the balance pans as before. The child still reads each scale and writes the amount with its unit, but now the answer often lands on an unlabelled line and has to be worked out rather than simply seen.

Fine scales are where scale reading turns into a real skill. Shown a level halfway between 200 and 300, a child who has only ever met labelled marks writes 200, or 300, or occasionally 250 by lucky guess. Counting the gaps, dividing, and naming the tick value is the method that survives every scale they will ever meet — thermometers, rulers, measuring spoons, the pointer on a kitchen dial. It rewards slowing down, which is precisely what measurement work should be teaching at this age.
